Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to discuss various initiatives being taken by the Indian Army to help in Covid-19 management, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.

General MM Naravane informed the prime minister that the medical staff of the Army is being made available to various state governments. He also briefed the PM that Army is setting up temporary hospitals in various parts of the country.

The Army chief also apprised the PM that Army is opening up its hospitals for civilians wherever possible. He added that citizens can approach their nearest Army hospitals.

Additionally, the Army is helping with manpower for imported Oxygen tankers and vehicles where specialised skills are required to manage them. 

Availability of liquid oxygen is one of the areas that has been a priority for the government. There is also a requirement for any equipment that produces oxygen - oxygen generators, concentrators, cryogenic tankers, transportation equipment for oxygen.

The meeting comes as India recorded a massive surge of 3,79,257 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. With today's cases, India has seen the biggest-ever daily surge, taking the caseload to 1,83,76,524. The country also recorded 3645 deaths and 2,69,507 discharges in the last 24 hours, as per Union Health Ministry.
